The renovation work on St Bavo's Cathedral of Ghent have been completed. Now you can come and admire the restored panels of the Ghent Altarpiece in a brand new display case in the visitor centre.

The visit starts in the crypt of the cathedral. With augmented reality headsets or tablets, you can travel into the past and experience the history of the Ghent Altarpiece and St Bavo's Cathedral as if you were there yourself.

As the highlight of the tour, you will come face to face with the one and only Ghent Altarpiece, the masterpiece of the Flemish brothers Van Eyck. Meyvaert designed a special showcase: the design was the result of a multidisciplinary process to find a good balance between visitor comfort, climate requirements, heritage aspects, religious context, aesthetics, safety and the design intent. The result is an climatized display case installed in an unheated cathedral. The display case is equipped with an additional passive system as a buffer.
