Catharijneconvent

The museum and collection

The Catharijneconvent is a former twelfth-century convent dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria. It is located in the heart of Utrecht, a stone's throw from the Dom Tower. The present and past of Christianity in the Netherlands is made visible through age-old and contemporary art.

The assignment

Using 25 carefully selected objects, the Catherine Hall gives visitors a solid introduction to the museum’s collection. This hall has been substantially rebuilt and adapted, allowing full access to the monastery to be maintained.

Meyvaert provided nine freestanding cabinets with hinged and sliding doors placed upon stone and wooden plinths. For each showcase, Meyvaert also made a bespoke mount that exquisitely allows the museum to safely present its artefacts in an aesthetic and educational manner.
