Hans Christian Andersen Museum

The museum and collection

Founded in the author’s birthplace in 1908, the Hans Christian Andersen House has reopened after an extensive renovation. Designed by architect Kengo Kuma, the museum reinterprets the work and life of Andersen. The 5600m2 complex has a children’s house and a subterranean exhibition space  surrounded by a magical garden. Landscaping, architecture, art and exhibition design all converge into an adventurous immersive experience. Visitors are surprised by each space that lies hidden along the curved path. The architect’s vision reflects Andersen’s method, where a small world suddenly expands to an entire universe. On display are books, notebooks, sketches, writing utensils, dried flowers and other belongings of Andersen. These artefacts are now beautifully presented in an exhibition design created by Event.

The assignment

Meyvaert developed, manufactured and installed 42 display cases including graphics and object mounts. The range consists of hoods, cylindrical hoods, table cases, recessed wall cases, a wall standing case and a floor-to-ceiling cylindrical case. In addition, we coordinated the integration of the cases in setworks such as tables and walls. Some of the cylindrical hoods, for example,  are placed on slim legs in a composition that represents a meadow with flowers. We also coordinated the integration of multimedia hardware, which include interactive tables and a screen for holographic projections. The most compelling designs, however, are the reflective cases. Cladded in mirrored steel and having only keyholes to look through, they are simply irresistible.

The project: challenges & results

By closely collaborating with the designers and the museum team from the earliest stages, we were able to deliver this project on time with all requirements fulfilled. Not only are the case designs unprecedented, they also meet the strictest conservation and security norms, safeguarding the world’s most beloved fairytales for generations to come.

In July 2021, TIME magazine listed Odense and the Hans Christian Andersen House as one of the top 100 places in the world, which makes us all the more proud to have participated in this project.
